Description

The cemetery chapels at Burngreave Cemetery, built between 1860 and 1861 by Flockton & Lee, are now used as stores. Constructed in the Gothic Revival style, they feature coursed rubble and dressed stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. The symmetrical layout includes a central tower and spire, connected by single-storey links to the chapels, which have large side vestries and porches.

The exterior showcases a chamfered plinth, string course, sillband, angle buttresses, and coped gables with kneelers and crosses. The three-stage tower has a central moulded archway with single shafts and hoodmoulds on the north and south sides. Above this, there is a clock, with single lancet windows on the east and west. The bell stage features deeply moulded two-light pointed arch bell openings on each side, topped by a coped gable. The spire has a tapering square base with a square bell turret that includes double lancet openings under moulded gables, and an octagonal needle spire with a tier of tiny lucarnes and a cross at the top.

The links between the chapels have a cusped double lancet with a central shaft. The south gables of the chapels have moulded doorways with hoodmoulds, and above them are traceried wheel windows with moulded surrounds. The north gables feature four-light pointed arch windows with hoodmoulds. The outer sides include gabled south vestries with gable stacks capped with cross-gabled tops, each gable containing a cusped double lancet and a trefoil window above. The shallow north porches have elaborate gables and moulded doorways with shafts and hoodmoulds, with two double lancets between the porches and vestries. The inner sides also have two double lancets, all with hoodmoulds, and beyond the links are single smaller lancets.

Inside, the chapels have arch-braced principal rafter roofs with traceried spandrels and wind braces, along with moulded sill and eaves bands and plain benches.
