Description

The Territorial Army Headquarters, marked as 'Postal Sorting Office' on the Ordnance Survey map, is a disused building located on Derby Road in Nottingham, dating from around 1910. It is constructed of red brick with an ashlar ground floor and dressings, featuring flat asphalt roofs and designed in the Baroque Revival style. The building has a plinth, rusticated angle pilasters, an eaves cornice, and a coped parapet with a balustrade above the center. It stands four storeys tall, including the rusticated ground floor, and has a facade of nine by five bays.

The windows are glazing bar sashes, with elongated keystones on the first and second floors. The slightly projecting center section consists of three bays divided by Ionic pilasters, featuring tripartite windows that are pedimented on the first floor and flanked by single windows. Above this, there is a Diocletian window flanked by round windows, all adorned with foliage surrounds. The basement includes a central round-arched rusticated carriage entrance with wrought-iron gates, while the side bays have three windows, with the ground floor windows being segment-headed.

The returns of the building exhibit regular fenestration, with the second bay flanked by rusticated pilasters and corniced and pedimented windows, including a round-arched window on the third floor. On the east side, there is an attached area railing. The inner courtyard features a central carriage entrance flanked by staircases, with a balcony and doorway situated above. The rear ranges are single storey with a double height space, showcasing tall round-arched openings.
