Description

55-59 Granby Street and 1 and 3 Belvoir Street is a building constructed in 1898 by Goddard and Co. It is made of ashlar and consists of three storeys plus an attic, situated on a corner site with facades facing both Belvoir Street and Granby Street. The ground floor features continuous modern shops. The first and second floors have three window bays. The first floor is distinguished by paired rusticated Ionic columns that support an entablature with a pulvinated frieze and segmental arch pediments above the columns. The first-floor windows are round-headed sashes with keyblocks, Ionic pilasters, and a central Venetian window. The second floor has three-light and five-light windows divided by Ionic pilasters, with carvings of the nine muses in shell-head niches between them. The corner of the building has a rounded first floor with three round-arch lights and a segment of a stone dome on the second floor, which is coved and rusticated. The left-hand end of the Belvoir Street elevation is rusticated and topped by a stone domed cupola. The roof is a slate mansard style, featuring semi-circular arched dormers and chimneys with cornices.
