Description
This row of four shops with accommodation above was built in 1888 by Arthur Wakerley. The building is constructed of red brick with terracotta and ashlar dressings, Welsh slate roofs, and brick chimney stacks.
The facade at number 122 has three windows, with a chamfered central section. The ground floor features an off-centre recessed doorway with a 20th-century door and overlight, flanked by original plate glass shop windows with glazing bar upper lights; the window to the right projects forward. Above, the original fascia board is hidden behind late 20th-century fascias. A central three-light transom and mullion window has an ornate carved hood, while either side are single sashes with glazing bar upper lights. Above again is a central round-headed window that rises into an ornate curved gable topped with a small pediment; this unusual window curves to a point at its base with an elaborate brick surround, and is flanked by single plain sashes.
Number 124 has a single-window facade, three storeys plus an attic. The ground floor has an altered shop front with doors on either side. Above, a round arch rises through two floors, with a recessed canted bay window at the first floor and a three-light cross casement window at the second floor, featuring a balcony with iron balustrade. The attic has a single two-light mullion window with lattice casements. A gable is surmounted by a curved pediment with ball finials to the sides.
Number 126 has a single-window facade, three storeys. The ground floor has an original wooden shop front with a recessed doorway to the right and a 20th-century door. Above is a balcony with square balusters, and two recessed plain sashes. A single square column supports a projecting canted bay window above, clad with tile hanging, and features a central three-light casement with flanking plaster panels and a wooden cornice. The roof is hipped and topped with a lead finial.
Number 128 has a single-window facade to London Road, a single-window canted corner, and a four-window facade to Highfield Street. The ground floor has original shop fronts with original glazing and fascia boards, divided by pilasters. The canted corner has an original glazed door flanked by decorated pilasters.
Highfield Street has four shop windows, three with original doors, divided by fluted pilasters with double access doors to the right. Above, the canted corner exhibits a round-headed window in an ashlar surround with a carved hood, above a single sash in an ashlar surround with pilasters; above again is a gable with a central pilaster. Either side are tripartite windows with round-headed centres in carved ashlar surrounds; above are single tripartite windows in ashlar surrounds and above are single niches topped with small pediments, that to the right dated 1888. Upper floors to the right have pairs of sash windows in ashlar surrounds topped with a gable to the right surmounted by a curved pediment.
The interior features an original plaster ceiling.
