Description
Nos 40 to 42 on St Mary's Gate form one building with Nos 18 and 19 Iron Gate. This structure dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and is constructed of red brick. It has three storeys and features a stucco band that unites the sills of the first-storey windows. There are 13 sash windows and a stone plinth.
No 42 retains a good glazed fanlight and a six-panelled door. No 41 has a moulded stone doorcase with a small cornice. No 40 features a portico with a frieze and cornice, paired Tuscan columns in antis, a moulded stucco eaves cornice, and a small parapet.
These buildings, along with Nos 25, 26, the former Technical College Annexe, and Nos 35 to 38, form a group with Nos 18 to 22 Iron Gate.
