Description
35-36 St Marys Gate is an early to mid-18th century building constructed of red brick. It stands three storeys high and features a central section with four windows flanked by two side wings, each with two windows. The central section has rusticated quoins and a prominent moulded cornice that projects over the keyblocks of each window. The sides are cement rendered, with the left side featuring a small cornice and parapet, while the right side has a cornice below the top storey windows, which have moulded surrounds, and a parapet. The central section includes inset sash windows with keyblocks, flat brick arches, and moulded sills.
No 36 has a distinctive dog-eared stone doorcase topped with a cornice and a small rectangular traceried fanlight. No 35 features a round-headed doorway with a moulded architrave and an inset six-panelled door with a traceried fanlight.
The interior is notable for its staircase, doorways, cornices, and panelling. This building, along with Nos 25, 26, the Former Technical College Annexe, Nos 35 to 38 (consecutive), and Nos 40 to 42 (consecutive), forms a group with Nos 18 to 22 (consecutive) Iron Gate.
