Description
This early 18th-century industrial building is located adjacent to Nos. 11 and 12 on Darley Street. It is a three-storey, five-bay structure made of brick, with a front that is painted white and a corrugated sheet roof supported by early timber trusses. The front elevation features irregular openings, including an entrance at the north end and a loading door above. The rear elevation has four 42-pane cast iron casement windows.
Historical maps from the early 18th century indicate that a building has existed on this site since that time, and the visible roof structure appears to date from the same period. In 1930, during the division of the Evans estate, the property was described in sale documents as comprising a workshop, an adjoining store, a loft above, a yard with a range of lean-to open sheds, and two small storage spaces.
The 18th and 19th-century houses and schoolrooms in Darley Abbey, built or acquired by various generations of the Evans family for their workers, are notable as a group and can be compared to the Arkwright settlement at Cromford and the Strutt settlements at Belper and Milford.
