Description
Built in 1826, 1 and 2 Brick Row were designed by Moses Wood of Nottingham as school rooms and commissioned by Walter Evans to replace earlier schoolrooms in an adjacent terrace. The building is brick-built with a slated roof, featuring a 9-bay design with a central and projecting end pediment. It has been converted into offices.
The building is arranged with classrooms on the ground and first floors in the centre, and schoolhouses at either end. Round-headed door and window openings are set in round-headed recesses, with a sill band to the first floor and a stone cornice. A broad pediment in the centre contains a clock made by John Whitehurst of Derby. Plain cast iron railings are set off stone walls.
Internally, cast iron columns support the upper floor, and the turret clock has one external dial and two internal dials, one each serving the two schoolrooms.
The building is very substantially complete in all its external detail and represents a fine example of a simple, monumental school building. It is part of a group of 18th and 19th century houses and schoolrooms in Darley Abbey, commissioned by the Evans family for their workers, which is notable for comparison with settlements established by Richard Arkwright at Cromford and Jedediah Strutt at Belper and Milford.
