Description
33-34 Iron Gate is a building dated 1906, constructed from red brick with stone dressings. It stands three storeys tall with an attic. The facade features a prominent four-light canted oriel window with stone mullions and transoms, flanked by another window on each side and one to the left. The oriel window on the right is tiered over the first and second storeys and is topped with a coped gable. The slightly projecting ground storey has a coped parapet and an arched doorway on the left, which is framed by a stone surround that includes a leaded double fanlight and is flanked by pilasters. Above the doorway is an arched pediment that encloses a cartouche displaying the date. The entrance features an eight-panelled door.
A small bronze plate on the building notes that Joseph Wright, the famous painter from Derby, was born in an earlier house that once stood on this site.
Nos 25 to 27, Nos 28-32, and Nos 33 and 34 are part of a group of buildings.
