Description
The Midland Railway War Memorial is a cenotaph approximately 10 meters tall, made of Portland stone. Atop the cenotaph lies an Unknown Soldier, partially covered with a greatcoat, with a Brodie helmet and a bayonet at his feet. This figure rests on a catafalque supported by the heads of four lions. On either side of the cenotaph, the Midland Railway Company’s coat of arms is displayed within a wreath.
The front of the cenotaph features the inscription: "TO THE BRAVE MEN OF THE MIDLAND RAILWAY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR." Each side of the cenotaph bears the dates "MCM XIV XIX."
Flanking the cenotaph is a 2-meter high wall, set back from the road, creating two rectangular alcoves that are each 7 meters wide and 3 meters deep. Bronze plaques attached to the back wall of these alcoves list the names of the 2,833 individuals who died, with a small step in front to allow children to view the names closely. The two outer corners of the memorial feature raised square bays, each with a flagpole.
