Description
The Clock Tower, dating from around 1850, is the remains of the original Midland Region Railway Station and was part of Francis Thompson's 'Trijunct' Station. This square tower is built of red brick and consists of four stages. Originally a detached structure, it is now integrated with a later five-storey building. The ground storey features rusticated brickwork and a semi-circular headed doorway, with a pediment above that is obscured by the end of a later footbridge. There is a moulded stone cornice at the second floor and a moulded stone eaves cornice. At the top, a timber lantern displays a clock face on each of its four sides, topped with a pyramidal roof and a wind vane shaped like Stephenson's 'Rocket'.
