Description

The Midland Hotel, built in 1842 by Francis Thompson, is a Grade II listed building located on Midland Road. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a principal facade that is three storeys high and consists of seven bays, with the outer bays slightly advanced and having even quoins on both sides. All window sashes are set in simple moulded stone frames. The first-floor windows have balconies, while the centre bays' windows are blind. There is a stone band at ground floor level and a moulded stone band at the first-floor sill level. A large stone cornice is located beneath the second floor, topped by a stone blocking course. In the outer bays, the ground floor windows are tripartite, the first-floor windows are coupled beneath a cornice, and the second-floor windows are arranged in triplets. Additionally, there is a single-storeyed block from around 1930 that connects the two five-storeyed, three-bay wings.
