Description

The Blackrod War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1925, with additions from the Second World War, designed by W Bradley MSA. It is made of ashlar Stancliffe sandstone and features a rectangular cenotaph set within a square enclosure, which includes two flower borders and paved areas.

The cenotaph itself stands approximately 3.76 meters (12 feet) tall and has a rectangular shaft with canted surfaces. It rises from a pedestal that has a shouldered and moulded upper surface, supported by a projecting plinth on a rectangular ashlar dais. The memorial is accessible from both the front and rear via stone-paved areas and is flanked by rectangular flower borders edged with low stone curbs. The sides of the monument are canted and feature plain raised panels with stopped edges at the base, plain friezes, and bronze flagpole sockets and brackets.

The front (south-west) and rear (north-east) elevations of the shaft each have a coffered central panel with a fielded tablet, flanked by plain pilasters that rise to a frieze with a depressed pediment. The front pediment and frieze are inscribed with "1914 – 1918 / TO THE GLORIOUS DEAD," while the rear pediment is inscribed with "1939 – 1945." The front panel lists the names of 43 individuals who fell during the First World War, stating: "IN / GRATEFUL MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF / BLACKROD, / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR // NAMES // THEIR NAME LIVETH / FOR EVERMORE." The rear panel records the names of 19 individuals who fell during the Second World War, with the inscription: "NAMES // LEST / WE / FORGET // NAMES." Additionally, two secondary ashlar tablets set into the base of the front of the cenotaph list the names of a further 22 individuals from the First World War.
