Description

The Church of St. Katharine is a church located on Black Horse Street in Blackrod. The lowest stage of the tower dates back to the early 16th century, while the second stage features date stones, one inscribed "MT 1638/NT" at the window sill and another dated 1647 for the external steps. The third stage was added in the 18th century, and the top of the tower has date 1837 inscribed on the pinnacles. The nave, chancel, and north aisle were constructed between 1909 and 1911 by R. B. Preston.

The tower is built of stone rubble with ashlar dressings, while the rest of the church is made of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and has a slate roof. The tower features diagonal buttresses and a 4-light late Perpendicular west window with two transoms above. The second stage has a 2-light straight-headed window, and the third stage includes paired pointed bell openings with stone louvres. The top of the tower has a four-faced clock, plain battlements, and pinnacles. There is a rectangular stair turret and external steps leading to a door on the north side.

The nave has a four-bay design with a sill course, weathered buttresses, and windows arranged in a pattern of 3:2:3:3 lights with Perpendicular tracery. The north vestry features a gabled bay and flanking lean-to bays. The three-bay chancel has a three-light east window and south windows with two and three lights. The five-bay gabled aisle includes a gabled porch with a traceried apex and an entrance of one order, with windows alternating between two and three lights. The east and west windows of the aisle are three-light. Adjacent to the porch is a font with a square base dated 1775, featuring a baluster and bell-shaped bowl.

Inside, the church has a five-bay arcade supported by octagonal piers. There is a segmental pointed arch leading to the tower, with a window above containing two round-headed lights. The walls of the tower are panelled with old pew doors that have name plates, and there are three charity boards. The chancel features an altar and reredos adorned with painted low relief panels. The aisle contains early 19th-century boards displaying the commandments, creed, and Lord's Prayer, along with arches and crocketed finials.
