Description
The Cross at Anderton is a Grade II listed structure that features part of a cross shaft, likely dating back to before the Conquest, which now serves as the base for a guidepost from the early 18th century. Made of gritstone, the remaining cross shaft is rectangular in shape and approximately 1 metre high, with carvings on all four sides. The north side possibly depicts the legs of a figure, while the south side showcases intersecting zigzags that create a vertical pattern of diamonds with crosses in the centers. The west side features a geometric design resembling a Greek key, and the east side's carving is uncertain. Atop the shaft is a square slab resembling a table, inscribed on all four sides with directional information: "TO. PRESTON" on the north, "TO. BOULTON" on the south, "TO. WIGGAN" on the west, and "TO. BLAGBURN" on the east. The upper surface of the slab shows marks from a former fixture, possibly a sundial.
