Description

Tan Pits Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into an office. It is dated 1722 on the lintel, but it was likely altered at that time and may be older. The building is constructed of coursed gritstone in two different sizes, featuring large quoins and a slate roof. It has two bays, with a rear outshut to the first bay and a large single-storey rear extension, along with a lean-to addition at the right end.

The farmhouse is two storeys high. Off-centre to the right, there is a board door with square jambs and a rectangular lintel that is lettered in relief with the letter A. To the right, an irregular tear-joint separates the larger masonry, which is inscribed H E 1722, from the smaller masonry. The right portion has a plinth and two 3-light windows, with the upper window featuring flush mullions. To the left, the rebuilt wall of the smaller masonry has two rectangular altered windows. There are chimneys on the centre of the ridge and at the right gable.

The left gable wall, made of very large blocks, has an altered 3-light window on each floor towards the rear, as well as a single-light attic window in the apex. The right gable wall has a blocked former opening beneath the lean-to. Inside, the interior has mostly been altered, but it retains large quarter-round moulded lateral beams in the front and rear parts of the first bay, along with beams resembling wallplates incorporated into the side and rear walls of the rear room.
