Description
Great House Barn is a barn that has been converted into a café. It likely dates from the 16th century, although it is dated 1702 on the gable. The barn has been reduced in size and underwent restoration, alterations, and enlargement around 1905 by Jonathan Simpson for Lord Leverhulme. It features a cruck frame with cladding of squared sandstone and stone slates.
The barn currently has three bays but was originally longer, with aisles added around 1905. The roof over these aisles has a flatter pitch and is carried down to a very low level. The broad south gable wall includes a Tudor-style timber-framed porch in the center, which is a 20th-century addition. There is a large five-light flush mullion window on each side of the porch and a similar four-light window above it, with a datestone above this window inscribed with the year. The north gable features a continuous 17-light window at ground level and a four-light window above, both dated 1702.
Inside, there are two full cruck trusses resting on very large boulder padstones, with blades of large scantling, collars, yokes, and replacement tie-beams. The blades, principals, dorsals, and windbraced purlins of the aisles appear to be modern additions.
