Description
The Unitarian Chapel, dated 1703, is located on Sheep House Lane in Rivington. It is constructed of squared sandstone with quoins and features a chamfered plinth and a stone slate roof topped with a gable bellcote. The chapel has two large cross-windows on each side and both gables, with diamond-latticed panes in the gable walls and rectangular panes in the side walls. On the south side, there are two doorways with chamfered surrounds; the right doorway has a pointed head and an inscribed lintel reading "1703". The west gable is adorned with a small hexagonal bellcote that has a swept roof.
At the northwest corner, there is a single-bay, two-storey wing with a hipped roof on one side and a gable at the other end, featuring a tall chimney stack. This wing includes a door and one window on each floor of the west side, along with two two-light square-mullioned windows on the east side, most of which have diamond lattice glazing.
Inside, the chapel retains its original box pews, including a choir stall at the east end. Between the windows on the north wall, there is a raised five-sided panelled pulpit with a carved frieze and moulded cornice. Further east on the same wall is a large 18th-century wall monument dedicated to the Willoughby family of Parham, which is fully lettered and features coats of arms and shields above the inscription. On the south side, between the windows, is the Willoughby family pew, which has a panelled reredos and a prominent moulded and carved cornice in a classical style.
In the graveyard at the east end of the chapel lies the gravestone of Samuel Oldknow, "of Nottingham, late of Anderton," who died in 1759 and was one of the earliest builders of textile factories.
