Description
Bradleys Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1683, located on Rivington Sheep House Lane. The building is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with quoins, set on a chamfered plinth, and features a graduated slate roof with stone gable copings and gable chimneys. It has a double-depth, two-bay plan with an end-baffle entry and a shallow rear outshut to the first bay, along with an extension to the rear.
The farmhouse is two storeys high. At the left end, there is an added single-storey gabled porch that interrupts the hoodmould of the inner doorway, which has a roll-moulded surround lintel with panelled raised lettering. The ground floor includes a series of 19th-century sashed windows, while the first floor features recessed chamfered mullion windows with two and two lights under one hoodmould and two and three lights under another hoodmould, although the first window above the porch is blocked. The left gable wall, which is rendered, has two windows on each floor, all casements except for the upper ones which have chamfered flush mullions, along with two blocked round-headed attic lights. The right gable wall has mostly blocked windows, including two and one light at the ground floor with hoodmoulds, and two and one light at the first floor, with two lights in the attic lacking the mullion. The rear of the building features a three-light window with a hoodmould at the ground floor of the second bay.
Inside, the farmhouse appears to have been altered, now featuring a central lateral passage and a dog-legged 19th-century staircase, along with boxed beams. This farmhouse is an early example of a double-depth plan interestingly combined with a traditional end-baffle entry, and it is notable for its date.
