Description

Lever Bridge, along with its staircases and a summer house, is located in Rivington Gardens and was built in 1910, designed by Lord Leverhulme. The associated stone staircases to the west and east, as well as the summer house at the top of the eastern staircase, were constructed in 1906 under the design of Thomas Mawson for Lord Leverhulme. All these structures are made of gritstone.

The bridge, also referred to as 'Seven Arches Bridge', carries a footpath over Roynton Lane. It is approached from the west by a short staircase with flanking walls that lead to a buttressed archway at the west end of the bridge. This archway features a voussoir made of thin gritstone slates and a keystone of the same material. The main arch spans Roynston Lane, above which there is a viaduct consisting of seven smaller arches, all with voussoirs of thin gritstone slates. The deck of the bridge rises towards the east, and the stone parapets are finished with thin gritstone slates.

From the east end of the bridge, a stone staircase with flanking walls continues uphill, dividing into two at a small flat viewing area before merging back into a single staircase with flanking walls that leads further uphill.

At the top of this staircase, there is a single-storey summer house with a flat roof. It features a central rectangular entrance accessed by two steps and flanked by columns made of thin, stacked gritstone. There are slightly protruding bays on either side, each containing a centrally-placed three-light stone mullion window with rock-faced gritstone surrounds. Additional staircases with flanking walls lead upwards around the north, south, and rear sides of the summer house, providing access to a viewing deck on the roof that is surrounded by a parapet. However, access to the interior of the summer house and its viewing deck is currently blocked by iron railings.
