Description

The summer house, designed by Thomas Mawson for Lord Leverhulme, was built in 1906 and is located overlooking the Great Lawn in Rivington Gardens. It is constructed from gritstone and has a rectangular plan.

This single-storey structure features a flat roof and is accessed via three steps that lead to a wide entrance. The entrance is divided into three sections by two pairs of thin, stacked gritstone columns, with similar columns at each end. On either side of the entrance, there are slightly protruding bays, each containing a centrally-placed rectangular window opening framed with rock-faced gritstone.

Flanking staircases on either side of the summer house lead up to a viewing deck that is surrounded by a parapet. The parapet is solid at both ends of the building but has a balustrade above the broad central entrance. Access to the interior of the summer house and the viewing deck is restricted by iron railings.
