Description

The loggia and summerhouse in Rivington Gardens were built between 1906 and designed by Thomas Mawson for Lord Leverhulme. They are accompanied by stone staircases and flanking walls that connect the two buildings. All features are constructed from gritstone with stone dressings, and both buildings have a rectangular plan.

The loggia overlooks a former swimming pool or boating lake to the south and is accessed via a short flight of steps on its south side. It features three semi-circular arches on the south elevation and one on the west, all supported by columns made of thin, stacked gritstone. The arches are made of thin gritstone slates. A thin cornice runs around the loggia, and above it is an altered parapet about 1 metre high, which surrounds a flat viewing deck accessible from the east side. A stone staircase with flanking walls leads uphill in an L-shape from a path on the loggia's south side to the entrance of the viewing deck. From this deck, a short paved path with flanking walls turns east, leading to another staircase with flanking walls that continues uphill to the summerhouse.

The single-storey summerhouse has a flat roof and is accessed from the west via a short flight of steps. It features a central rectangular entrance flanked by columns of thin, stacked gritstone. On either side of the entrance, there are slightly protruding bays with centrally-placed rectangular window openings surrounded by rock-faced gritstone. Staircases with flanking walls provide access around the north, south, and rear sides of the summerhouse, leading to a viewing deck on the roof where the former parapet has been removed.

Access to the interiors and viewing decks of both the loggia and the summerhouse is blocked by iron railings.
