Description

The summer house, designed by Thomas Mawson for Lord Leverhulme, was built in 1906 and is located overlooking the site of a former tennis court in Rivington Gardens. Constructed from gritstone, it has a rectangular plan and is a single-storey structure with a flat roof.

The summer house features a broad entrance at the center, which is divided into three sections by two pairs of thin, stacked gritstone columns. Additional columns are positioned at both ends of the entrance. On either side of the entrance, there are slightly protruding bays, each containing a centrally-placed rectangular window opening with rock-faced gritstone surrounds.

Staircases with flanking walls ascend on either side of the summer house, leading to a viewing deck that is surrounded by a parapet on the flat roof. The parapet is solid at both ends of the structure, while the area above the broad central entrance is balustraded. Access to the interior of the summer house and the viewing deck is restricted by iron railings.
