Description
The summerhouse, built between 1899 and 1905 by Thomas Mawson, is located approximately 250 metres south-east of Wood House. It features granite rubble walls arranged to create a crazy paving effect, with granite ashlar quoins and detailing, topped by a thatched roof.
The structure is rectangular with canted corners and an open front facing west towards the lake. The roof over the open front is supported by monolithic granite posts, each with simple classical caps. The posts are uniquely shaped with five uneven sides to fit their corner positions, and the roof is hipped at both ends. Inside, the back wall is lined with narrow, full-height fielded oak panelling.
This summerhouse is part of a larger landscaping project designed by Mawson to accompany the rebuilding of Wood House, with the nearby lake being a significant element of the overall design. Mawson regarded this landscaping scheme as one of his major achievements.
