Description

Garden Cottages is a row of three cottages built around 1905, likely designed by Dan Gibson. The cottages have plastered walls, which are probably made of stone rubble, and possibly brick. They feature stone rubble or brick stacks with plastered chimney shafts that are hexagonal in shape, all topped with slate roofs.

The cottages are set back from the road, facing west, and are numbered 1 to 3 from right to left. No. 2 is in the center and has a two-room layout with rear lateral stacks. The outer cottages, Nos. 1 and 3, are L-shaped with three-room plans, each having a third room that projects forward at right angles to No. 2, and they feature projecting lateral stacks on their inner sides. The main block projects slightly at each end, with a roof that extends over porches. All three cottages are two stories tall with integral outshots at the rear.

The exterior is not perfectly symmetrical. Each gabled front wing has two two-light windows and a four-light window on the first floor. The central part of the main block has a front door to the left of a five-light window, and on the first floor, there are a two-light and a three-light window, both under a gable. All windows are timber-mullioned casements with rectangular panes of leaded glass and simple slate drip courses above. The porches at either end are supported by square plastered posts. Nos. 1 and 3 retain their original panelled doors, while No. 2 has a 20th-century replacement. The main roof is gable-ended.

The interior has not been inspected. These estate cottages are built in a style very similar to the nearby Wood House, which was also designed by Gibson, alongside the landscaping by Thomas Mawson.
