Description
Woodball Cottages is a row of three cottages built around 1900-1905, likely designed by architect Dan Gibson, who also designed Wood House nearby. The cottages have plastered walls, which are probably made of stone rubble or possibly brick, with stone rubble or brick stacks topped by plastered chimney shafts. They feature a slate roof.
Each cottage faces south and has an identical L-shaped plan. They each have a front entrance on the left side and consist of two rooms arranged one behind the other, sharing a right-end stack. The right-end cottage has a projecting gable-end stack, and the rear room extends into a block that projects at right angles. All three cottages are two storeys high.
The exterior of each cottage has a regular two-window front, but only the right cottage retains its original casements with glazing bars. Each cottage has a doorway on the right end, set under a round-headed arch, with only the right cottage having its original plank door. The front features a four-light casement, and of the two first-floor windows, the right one is a gabled dormer. The doors and windows are topped with plain slate drip courses. The main roof of the block is gable-ended to the right and hipped to the left.
The interiors have not been inspected. These cottages were likely built for estate labourers as part of the rebuilding of Wood House and the landscaping of the grounds by Thomas Mawson during the early 1900s.
