Description
Hayrish Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid-17th century, possibly with earlier origins, and was extended in the 19th century. It features rendered cob and rubble walls and has a gable-ended slate roof. There is a brick stack at the right gable end and another rendered axial stack set in from the left-hand end. The original plan consisted of a three-room layout with a through passage, with the lower end to the left. The hall stack backs onto the passage, and it is unclear if the fireplaces in the lower and inner rooms were original or added later. The house was slightly extended at the left-hand end in the 19th century. In the 20th century, a tile partition between the hall and inner room was removed, and a one-storey addition was built at the right-hand end.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical five-window front featuring early 20th-century two and three-light casements. A 20th-century glazed door is located at the left-hand end, while a 19th-century panelled door to the passage is positioned left of centre behind an open-fronted trellised porch. Inside, the hall has a granite-framed fireplace with a hollow chamfered lintel, and the back of the fireplace, facing the passage, is made of granite ashlar with a chamfered cornice. The lower room includes an ovolo-moulded cross-beam with two chamfered beams extending from it to the fireplace. The old roof timbers were replaced when the thatch was removed from the house.
