Description
The walls and summerhouse of the north garden at Wood House were built between 1899 and 1905 by Thomas Mawson. The walls are made of granite rubble, designed to resemble crazy paving, with granite ashlar details and quoins, topped with slate coping. The north garden lawn is enclosed on three sides by high walls, with an opening on the southeast side leading towards the house. The back wall curves behind a small summerhouse, which has a circular plan supported by monolithic granite front posts in a classical style. There is a stone seat around the back of the summerhouse, which features a conical thatch roof. On either side of the summerhouse are round-headed niches with moulded eared architraves, with three additional niches on the left side, although none currently hold statues. A doorway in the back wall contains an original door. This structure is part of a larger landscaping project designed by Mawson to accompany the rebuilding of Wood House, which could be viewed from the billiard room in the house. Mawson regarded this work as one of his major achievements.
