Description
Rivington Castle is a replica of the ruins of the former Liverpool Castle, built in 1912 for Lord Leverhulme, although it remains uncompleted. The structure is made of squared gritstone and features an almost rectangular bailey with a great hall on the north side, gatehouses on each side, and circular corner towers. Designed in a Gothic style, it includes triangular-headed arched doorways and embrasures, as well as three semi-circular arches leading from the bailey to the gatehouse. There are also remains of a stone spiral staircase at the northwest corner. This castle is a principal feature of the park designed by T.H. Mawson for the enjoyment of the inhabitants of the County Borough of Bolton. As of 1985, the site is fenced in.
