Description
No 3 Market Place is a house that has been converted into a bank. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone some alterations since then. The building is made of rendered brick with painted stone details and has a slate roof. It stands three storeys high and has three bays.
On the left side, there are two steps leading up to a semi-circular-headed doorcase, which features a deeply recessed six-fielded-panel door beneath a traceried fanlight. This door leads to a staircase that goes to the upper floors. To the right, there is a shop front with three 20th-century semi-circular-headed openings. There is a glazed door on the left and two plate-glass windows on the right, all set within a 19th-century surround that includes Tuscan pilasters between the openings and at the ends. This surround supports an entablature with a plain frieze decorated with paterae over the end pilasters, along with a moulded cornice that has a stepped blocking course.
The first floor features three plate-glass sash windows, while the second floor has three 20th-century pivoting windows; all of these are in their original surrounds with architraves and projecting sills. The building has a coved eaves band and a fine modillioned cornice, with a blocking course above that has raised central and end panels. The roof is steeply pitched and has 19th-century brick end stacks with yellow brick quoining.
