Description

The Quaker Meeting House, built in 1847, is a significant structure located on Pontefract Road in Low Ackworth. Constructed from sandstone ashlar with a slate roof, it features a rectangular plan consisting of three by five bays and stands two storeys tall in a Classical style. The entrance front is symmetrical and pedimented, with a three-bay façade that is covered at the ground floor by a Tuscan colonnade made of coupled columns and a plain entablature. There are three doorways on the ground floor and three 12-pane sash windows on the first floor, all adorned with architraves, a dentilled pediment, and an oculus at the apex. The return walls and rear of the building maintain the same architectural style.

An attached lodge is located at the front right-hand corner of the Meeting House. This lodge is one storey high, with a two by two bay layout, and is incorporated within the colonnade. It features pilasters and semi-columns, a narrow central doorway recessed between a pair of semi-columns, and a 12-pane sash window in each side bay. The right-hand return wall has coupled pilasters on either side, a single central pilaster, and similar windows.

Inside the Meeting House, there is a horseshoe gallery supported by slender iron columns. At the rear end, a raised floor is accessible by steps on both the left and right, and is protected by plain panelling with a ramped handrail.
