Description

Nos 2 to 10 Northgate, including No 2A Westmorland Street, are buildings dating from the late 18th century to the mid-19th century. They consist of four separate constructions, each three stories high. The two northern buildings have three and four windows and are quite similar in appearance. They are made of red brick and feature a stone eaves cornice supported by small paired brackets. The roofs are low-pitched and hipped, covered with Welsh slate. The buildings have gauged brick arches and stone sills for their late 19th-century sash windows, with the second building showcasing fluted triple keystones. Two of the windows still have their original glazing bars. The ground floor has a modern shop front with a tall stucco tend that extends across the front of the other buildings. The third building, dating from the early 19th century, is lower but maintains a similar style and materials. The fourth building is even lower, consisting of a single bay with a rounded angle on the south return, where a taller, later four-story Italianate bay has been added, featuring elaborate stone decorative details. These buildings are significant due to their important position in relation to the Cathedral. There is also a five-bay return to Westmorland Street, with some windows retaining their glazing bars.
