Description
This mile post, located approximately 80 metres south of the colliery entrance on Park Road in Pontefract, dates from the mid to late 19th century. It features a cast-iron front with a triangular shape, which is attached to a round-topped ashlar sandstone back.
The left side of the mile post displays the inscriptions 'DONCASTER/15 MILES/ PONTEFRACT/MARKET CROSS/¾ MILE'. The right side lists distances to various locations: 'BOROBRIDGE/29 MILES/ WETHERBY/16½ MILES/LEEDS/12½ MILES/ABERFORD/9½ MILES/CASTLEFORD/2½ MILES'. The top of the post reads 'BARNSDALE & LEEDS/ROAD/PONTEFRACT'.
Additionally, the sloping triangular top is marked with the maker's name, 'BRAYSHAW & BOOTH/MAKERS/LIVERSEDGE'.
