Description
This is a milepost located approximately 100 metres east of the junction with Frickley Bridge Lane, dating from the early 19th century. It was made by Grove Foundry in Gomersall and is constructed of cast iron, fixed onto a sandstone pillar. The milepost features angled sides and a sloping top-plate beneath a round-headed panel. The raised lettering on the upper panel reads "BARNSLEY & PONTEFRACT ROAD / BRIERLEY." On the left side, it indicates "BARNSLEY / 6 / MILES," and on the right side, it states "PONTEFRACT / 8 / MILES." There is also a maker's name plaque on the sloping top-plate. This milepost is situated on a section of the Barnsley to Pontefract turnpike, which was opened in 1835.
