Description
The Mortuary Chapel, built around 1860, is no longer in use. It is constructed from rock-faced snecked stone with ashlar dressings and features Welsh slate roofs adorned with fishscale bands, showcasing a Decorated Gothic Revival style. The chapel is divided into two sections by an archway, topped with a spire, and includes vestibules that create a symmetrical elevation with five bays. The eastern half is used by the established church, while the western half serves non-conformist denominations.
The building has a plinth and pointed windows with Decorated-style tracery. The chapels project outward and are supported by stepped setback buttresses, featuring three-light windows and steep coped gables. The vestibules contain two-light windows and lower steep coped gables. The central archway is prominent, with a moulded pointed arch that transitions into plain chamfered jambs, and a single-light opening above. The broached spire is made of coursed stone and includes a parapet pierced with trefoils, along with gargoyles and vents. The rear of the chapel is similar in design but has a more recessed archway. The side returns feature stepped buttresses between the bays and shorter two-light windows. The roofs still display remnants of decorative clay ridge tiles. Pointed doorways within the tower arch provide access to the chapel vestibules.
