Description
Transhelf House is a house that likely dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring painted stone and gauged brick dressings, and has a graduated slate roof. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has a symmetrical facade of three bays.
The central bay includes a full-height elliptical-arched recess with a gauged brick arch. There is a stone plinth with three steps leading up to a five-panel door, which is topped by a traceried fanlight set in a moulded semi-circular headed architrave. This architrave has imposts and panelled reveals, along with a pilastered surround that includes reeded consoles, dosserets, a frieze, and a cornice.
On either side of the central bay are tripartite bow windows that have brick plinths, stone sills, and moulded cornices. The front windows are 12-pane sashes, while the side windows are eight-pane sashes, with pilasters between and at the corners. The first floor features an ashlar band and three 12-pane sashes, all with stone wedge lintels that are incised with voussoirs. The central window is slightly shorter and has a panelled stone apron below, while the side windows have stone sills. The building has a timber eaves board and stone coped gables with brick end stacks, as well as the remains of a central ridge stack. There are semi-circular headed attic windows in the gable returns.
An attached single-storey shop to the left is not of special interest.
