Description

Number 22 and 24, including the shop premises on the corner of Corn Market and Shoe Market, are two houses that have been converted into two shops with a hairdressing salon above. They date from the late 18th century or early 19th century and have undergone later alterations. The buildings are constructed of painted brick in English garden wall bond and feature a Welsh slate roof.

The structure is three storeys high and has two bays. The ground floor has 20th-century shop fronts that are not of special interest. The first-floor windows are sash windows, while the second-floor windows are smaller, with 20th-century casements on the left and a sash window on the right. All windows have projecting ashlar sills and ashlar voussoired wedge lintels. The roof is hipped to the left, and there is a large ridge stack situated between the bays.

On the left return, there are two bays. The ground floor features a four-panel door with an overlight and a chamfered lintel, providing access to the upper floors. The upper windows match those on the front, except both second-floor windows are 20th-century casements. There is a matching one-bay range on the left, which has a straight joint between it and the main building, and it returns into Shoe Market while facing Corn Market. The buildings are included for their group value.
