Description
Nos 138 to 148 Westgate is a late 18th century or early 19th century building originally composed of two houses. It is a large structure with three storeys and a sunk basement, featuring seven bays. The exterior is made of red brick and includes a stone fluted frieze and a modillioned eaves cornice beneath a low-pitched hipped roof covered with stone slates. There is a stone band at the ground floor and a cill band. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are topped with gauged flat brick arches that feature fluted triple keystones and stone cills, with half-length windows on the second floor. The central windows and carriage arch are set within a full-height round-arched recess. To the left, there is a later door with an oblong fanlight, which is well recessed and accessed by five steps. On the right, two late 19th century shops have been inserted. The original entrances are located on either side within the carriageway and consist of six-panel doors in plain reveals. The nine-bay rear elevation includes tall, round-headed staircase windows located in the third and seventh bays.
