Description

The Zion United Reformed Church, along with its attached lodge to the northeast, was built in 1844, although a plaque indicates a predecessor building dated 1782. This tall, near-square building is designed with Italianate influences. It has a sunken basement and is arranged over one storey. The south front has five bays, while the returns feature seven bays. The construction is ashlar, with pilaster divisions that support architraves above recessed windows. These windows are very tall with round heads, margin lights, and a circular pattern of small panes within. The building has a main entablature with a frieze of medallions and a bracketed cornice, topped by a parapet with a raised, pedimented centre displaying the word "ZION" in relief. A wider central recess on the front contains a window head above a long double door, set within an architrave with a pulvinated frieze, cornice, and pediment. Pilasters rest on a band above a basement storey, which features low sash windows. Adjoining the church is a one-and-a-half-storey, two-bay lodge constructed of similar materials and with a hipped slate roof.
