Description
38 Westgate is an early 18th-century building located on the north side of Westgate. It features a main west front that is three stories high with four closely set windows, which are canted outwards at the returns. The building is constructed of soft red brick, with stone quoins and a second-floor band that rests on the keystones of cambered brick arches above the first-floor windows. Similar arches are present above, but these do not have keystones. The windows have been replaced with sashes set in wooden architraves. The roof has been rebuilt, and the gable end wall rises above the eaves. The ground floor has late 19th-century shops. Additionally, the building extends eastward into a small shop that is attached to the rear of Nos 1 and 3 Marygate.
