Description
The Horsforth War Memorial, erected in 1929 and manufactured by James Hird Thompson, is a Grade II listed structure made of grey stone. It is an irregularly shaped monolith approximately 2 metres high, situated on a raised area of paving atop a low brick platform, which features two steps at the front and angled raised flower beds in brick on either side.
The front face of the memorial displays a bronze plaque that reads: "THIS AVENUE IS PLANTED/IN COMMEMORATION OF THE/211 MAN AND WOMEN FROM HORSFORTH/WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES/IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914-1918./'WE LIE DEAD IN MANY LANDS/THAT YOU MAY LIVE HERE IN PEACE.'"
The memorial is located at the centre of an avenue of trees planted along Stanhope Drive, which originally had a name plaque on each tree; however, these plaques are now missing. The trees remain and are considered part of the war memorial. The memorial was unveiled by the Countess of Harewood in 1929.
The Horsforth War Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the local impact of global events and stands as a significant tribute to the lives lost during the war.
