Description

A row of seven cottages, dating back to the 18th century and altered subsequently, stands on Town Street in Horsforth. The buildings are a remodelling of a former farmhouse and its outbuildings. Constructed of coursed squared sandstone with quoins, the roof is covered in stone slate. Number 123, likely originally a barn, is set back at the left end and runs parallel to the rear of the other buildings. It features remains of a segmental-headed wagon arch with a keystone on its front, with a corresponding opening in the rear wall. There are two plain doorways at ground floor, a coupled window on each floor to the left, and a single-light window at first floor to the right, close to the gable wall of number 125. The left gable has a kneeler, ashlar coping, and a gable chimney.

The main range of cottages has a quoined vertical joint between numbers 125 and 127. Number 125, seemingly an addition facing part of the original rear range, possesses a doorway with a small-chamfered surround, two ground-floor windows and three above. Most of the windows are large and rectangular, with altered glazing. Number 129 has a similar doorway to the right-hand side, flanked by rectangular windows. An inserted or altered bow window is on the left, with two coupled windows at first floor and a circular window within a square surround between them. A vertical joint is visible to the right at this level.

Number 131 is single-fronted with a doorway to the right and coupled windows to the left. Number 133 displays the jambs and part of the head of a former wagon entrance. An inserted doorway and wooden bow window are at ground floor, with a single-light window to the left and a coupled window above. Number 135, also single fronted, has a plain doorway and a coupled window on each floor to its left. There is a chimney at the left gable and five ridge chimneys, some corniced and others cut down. Shaped kneelers and ashlar coping are present at the left end, with plain coping to the right-hand end.
