Description

The Church of St James is a church built between 1847 and 1848 by C. W. Burleigh of Leeds. It is constructed from coursed sandstone and has a slate roof. The church features a nave with north and south aisles, both under parallel roofs, and a chancel, all designed in the Early English style. The buttressed five-bay aisles have two-centred arched windows, each with two cusped lights and decorative trefoils or quatrefoils in the heads, all set under hoodmoulds with figured stops.

The north aisle includes a gabled single-storey porch at the second bay, featuring a deeply-moulded two-centred-arched doorway under a hoodmould with blank-shield stops. The south aisle has a triangular porch that is integrated with a buttress between the fourth and fifth bays. The west gable wall displays a low two-centred-arched west doorway, which is moulded in two orders and set under a hoodmould with figured stops, along with a stepped drip-mould and a large west window with four cusped lights, also under a hoodmould with figured stops. A gable bellcote is present, and the west ends of the aisles have three-light windows with multifoil tracery. Apex crosses adorn all gables.

The two-bay chancel is designed in a similar style and features a three-light traceried east window. Inside, the church has five-bay aisle arcades supported by octagonal columns and double-chamfered arches.
