Description

Nos. 5, 6, and 7 Troy Hill is a lesser gentry house from the early 17th century, originally built for John Craven and now divided into three dwellings. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone and features a stone slate roof. It has a double-depth plan beneath a two-span roof and stands two storeys tall.

The east front is almost symmetrical and includes a continuous drip mould. The former doorway, which has been altered into a window, is slightly offset to the right of centre and has a moulded surround. There are two inserted doorways on either side of this, each with plain surrounds. The front also features two large transomed windows on each floor; the left ground floor window has three lights plus two, with a king-mullion, while the others have four lights. Between these, at the first floor, is a smaller three-light mullioned window. All windows are deeply recessed and have chamfered mullions. The gables are topped with corniced chimneys and unusual moulded copings.

On the rear block, which faces west, there are three recessed mullioned windows on each floor. All but one of these are five-light windows; the right-hand ground floor window has three lights. This side also features similar gable copings and chimneys, along with a modern chimney on the ridge.

Inside, it is reported that the house contained fine carved panelling until the mid-1960s, but it has since been altered. The house was sold to the Stanhope family in the 17th century.
