Description
The former corn mill building at Dickinson's Auto Spares, located at Corn Mill Fold, is a water-powered corn mill that has been converted into a store. It was constructed between 1772 and 1787 by William Wright. The building is made of coursed squared sandstone with quoins and features stone slate roofs. It has an L-shaped plan formed by inter-linked blocks at right angles and consists of three and two storeys.
The east block, likely the original mill, is three storeys high and has three bays. It features square two-light windows with slightly-recessed flat-faced mullions, which are irregularly arranged and mostly blocked at the lower levels. The top level has three windows that are now boarded. There is a quoined vertical joint between the second and third bays up to the first floor level, along with some anciently-blocked windows to the right and a slit-breather.
The south gable includes a garage doorway at ground floor, a two-light window on the second floor, and a similar window in the apex of the gable, which has stacked pigeon-holes and perching ledges above it. The south block, which partly overlaps this gable, is two storeys high and has three bays. It features a segmental-arched wagon entrance in the centre, with two blocked loading doors above and blocked two-light windows on three levels to the right. To the left, there is a doorway at ground floor and two vertically-aligned vertical-rectangular blocked windows, all with plain surrounds. A vertical joint is visible near the left corner, along with remains of a wall from a formerly adjacent building.
