Description
Ida Convalescent Hospital is a convalescent hospital built around 1890 by the architects Chorley and Connon. It features a combination of stone, render, and mock timber-frame with a slate roof, showcasing the Arts and Crafts style. The central reception block is three stories high and has three bays. The ground floor is made of coursed stone and includes a cambered arch and cross windows. The first floor is rendered and features a central oriel window, with paired black-and-white gables above, each gable containing a five-light casement window, although the right gable now has a three-light window. The upper gables are rendered and jettied. On either side of the central block, there are single-storey angled wings, each with four projecting gabled open verandas that have been walled up and glazed, and mock timbering at the apex of each gable. The interior has not been inspected. A plaque in the rear entrance hall indicates that the building was donated by Mr. and Mrs. North for the use of patients from Leeds General Infirmary in memory of their daughter, Ida. An architectural drawing published in The Builder on March 17, 1888, shows a larger and more elaborately decorated version of the building.
