Description

Manor House Barn is a barn dating from the mid-16th century, constructed with a timber frame that is encased in stone, possibly from the early 18th century, with later brick additions up to the first-floor level from the 19th century. The barn features random rubble and orange/red brick that is rendered, topped with a Welsh blue-slate roof, although it is believed to have originally been thatched.

The structure is a 4-bay aisled barn with a continuous aisle at the south (rear) and an aisle at the first bay to the north. The north front has a tall cart-entry set back, featuring a wooden lintel, two exposed posts, and wall-plates of the central truss. To the right, the brick above a stone foundation suggests that part of the barn may have been timber-framed originally.

Inside, the barn consists of four bays of post-and-truss construction, with posts that have jowelled heads resting on padstones, and large curved braces connecting to the arcade-plate and tie-beam. The timbers are of large scantling. Single rafters extend from the ridge to the arcade-plate and wall-plate on the north side, resting on a single purlin supported by nearly vertical clasping angle-struts from the tie-beam. The rafters have halvings for collars, which are no longer present, indicating that the barn originally had a collar-rafter roof. A distinctive feature of the barn is the presence of an extra central truss that is back-to-back, with each supporting a separate wall and arcade-plate. This is likely an original feature, as there is no mortice hole on the inner face for a brace to the plates.
