Description
This square outbuilding, located north of the rear of a bungalow and immediately south of the junction with The Ridge, was built in the mid-18th century, possibly by architect James Paine. Its original purpose is uncertain, but it now serves as a stable and water tower. The building features a green-slate roof and is a single-storey structure with one bay on each side. It has a plinth and raised vermiculated rusticated quoins at the corners and all openings.
Each face of the building has a round-arched recess with voussoirs aligned to the courses. Three sides of the recess are filled with a blocked window that has a deep apron and a projecting sill, while the fourth side contains a doorway with monolithic jambs and tall double doors. The tympanum of each arch is adorned with finely-carved plaques featuring different designs, including swags, foliage, and a cartouche on the northern side. A bold cornice with casement moulding runs along the top, and there is a blocking course with corner ball-finials that have a square band of vermiculated rustication. The pyramidal roof is topped with an urn on a moulded plinth.
Inside, the floor is cobbled with drainage channels, and there is a large lead water tank in the roof space. This building is situated on the southern perimeter of the Stockeld Park estate, which was designed by James Paine between 1758 and 1763, and it shares similarities with other estate buildings by him.
