Description

Farnley Hall is a country house, dating back to 1586, with substantial additions in 1806 and alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries, designed by Edward Armitage. The construction uses ashlar and coursed squared gritstone, and features a low-pitched slate hipped roof with a cornice and blocking course. The house is arranged in an L-shape, with the main wing facing south and a rear wing incorporating a fragment of an earlier 16th-century house.

The south front has two storeys and seven windows, with a slightly projecting central section topped by a pediment. A central portico with an entablature supported by four Tuscan columns provides the main entrance, and above it is a three-light window flanked by pilasters and a cornice. A moulded sill course and band run along the facade. The windows are sash windows without glazing bars. The right return features a two-storey bowed end bay with three windows, the outside of which is blind.

The rear wing’s east facade has twelve windows with plate-glass sashes and plain stone surrounds. A doorway and flanking windows are set within a rusticated surround crowned by a cornice, positioned to the left of centre. The interior of the main range was not inspected, but the rear wing contains an archway with a decayed stone panel displaying the coat of arms of Sir Thomas Danby, alongside an inscription reading: 'Buildid the year of our Lord 1586 and in the reign of the Queen (? Eliz) bi S Thomas Danby Kn.'
