Description
The Oakwood Fish Bar is a fish bar with accommodation and offices above, built around 1890 and altered between 1938 and 1940. The building has three storeys, with the upper part constructed of coursed stone featuring ashlar details and a shaped gable. On the first floor, there is a four-light cross mullion window, and above it, a similar three-light window. The shop front is made of vitrolite, metal, and glass, with bakelite, metal, and neon lettering, reflecting a modern style. It includes a recessed two-leaf door with half-segment glazed panels and a circular shop window to the right, which has metal glazing bar divisions; the lower segment is acid-etched and sand-blasted to depict waves. A frieze displays neon lettering that reads 'FISH BAR'.
Inside, the walls are panelled with vitrolite. Historical records show that in the early 1930s, the premises were occupied by Rowland Wilson, a fruiterer, and by 1940, it had become the shop of Garside and Pearson, fried fish dealers.
